About the game

Get up.

Every hundred years, the water of the old well turns black, and the people of the estuary turn into ghouls.

You wake at the bottom of that well, under the dead. A ghoul yourself, but lucid. A voice tells you to get up.

The Last Ghoul is a top-down action game with a story. Crawl out of the sewers, find a blade, and hold the castle until dawn against waves of the hungry. Then the well pulls you further down, into older nights of the same curse.

The hero, seen from behind, walks through the rain towards the barred gate of the castle; a brazier burns in the foreground
The gate, the first night.

What you do

Fight, take, hold.

  1. Fight like a ghoul.

Slash, charge heavy blows, roll, kick, and devour the fallen to heal and feed your Frenzy.

  2. Take what the dead leave behind.

Swords and axes taken from the dead, harpoons that drag the brutes down, powder kegs that clear a gate.

  3. Hold the line.

Gates, chapels and wells to defend with the machines of each place: a portcullis, ballistae, a ballast cage, a ship’s broadside.

  4. Keep moving.

Gallop through a burning town, cross a harbour at low tide, board a ship in a storm.

  5. Face the masters of the hungry.

A Glutton, a Necromancer, a Baron whose heart beats behind iron ribs, and worse further down.

Highlights

No two nights play the same.

  • A campaign of about five hours: a castle under siege, a pirate harbour, a ship in a storm, a monastery in the snow.
  • Every chapter has its own place, its own machines and its own way to move.
  • A story told through places, memories and a few spoken lines, never through walls of text.
  • Heavy, readable gore: limbs fly, and hunger is a mechanic, not a decoration.
  • A voice in the well, and three endings.
